The Harpswell Neck Physical Education Association (HNPEA) was founded in 1965 by local residents to provide summer activities for children in the community. Two tennis courts and a workshop for crafts, funded by private donations, were built on land leased from the Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell Center. For 58 years, HNPEA has run a day camp during the month of July for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade, charging only a minimal registration fee. Until 2013, the day camp had only run in the mornings from 9 AM to 12 PM. Adapting to the current needs of our campers and their families, the HNPEA Board of Directors added a supplemental afternoon session from 12 PM to 3 PM. Today, more than 98% of campers participate in the full-day program and this population is growing. As a response to our families' needs, we piloted an early start program in 2019 that begins at 8:00am daily. As a result of its success and the need in our community we will continue to provide this program for an additional fee.
HNPEA is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. Since 1965, the cost of maintenance and programs has been met by voluntary contributions, fund-raising events, donated services, and day camp registration fees. A core mission of HNPEA is to provide an affordable day camp to all children in the community regardless of family income. With the escalating costs of insurance and facilities maintenance, we increasingly depend on the generosity of community members to support our mission.
